My Deepest Secret

Friends blather on and on about dunkels and hefferweissens and maltiness and finish, and I do the same, more or less, on wine. But the only beers that I purchase for myself to drink–the only beers that I really like–are somewhat less than classy.

At the moment and for the past couple years, Pabst Blue Ribbon has been my favorite, which is not to say that I like it all that much but just as much as I’m able to like a beer. It’s sweet but not too much and not complex or yeasty and goes down so easily. That it’s been hip for a year or two is just convenient–more bars have it on tap and so I have an alternative to hard liquor when I want one. Next to Pabst is probably Rolling Rock and then Yuengling and then Coors or Keystone Light. (Or maybe Yuengling is #2?) Fortunately for me, PBR is $3.50 at the Black Cat, about half what all the other beers go for. If the prices were reversed, I’d still order the same. Generally, it’s not possible to get beers on draught that are less expensive than my favorites.

Tonight, however, I try something new. “Natty Bo,” or more properly National Bohemian, is a brew from Baltimore originally that apparently has some following in the region. It has been, I think, resuscitated from near death, probably after its owner realized how many cases PBR has been moving lately. According to the City Paper, Bo is not bad, and the evident plainness of it, not to mention the price, appeals to me.

“From the Land of Pleasant Living” is a very intriguing catchphrase. Full report to follow, probably (especially if it’s bad).
