WFMU and Last.fm

WFMU is the best radio station ever.

Last.fm is the best…um, whatever it is. Web-2.0 database driven music scrobbler?

What I want is a way to listen to WFMU shows that will input the songs into Last.fm.

It’s already been done for Pandora, which isn’t even that great of a service in my experience. Nothing beats an excellent DJ, and ‘FMU, unlike Pandora which uses some algorithmic system has years worth of great shows online, with playlists and often with timestamps. There ought to be some way to do this.

My first thought is: a flash player widget that interacts with JS in the page to determine what’s playing and send that info, as appropriate, to last.fm. Problems: wouldn’t work with the Realaudio archives, most likely, just the recent MP3 ones; would only work on shows with timestamps; would take extra coding to work with the live streams; would have to be done in-browser.

Another way to do it: for the MP3 streams, this could be done via Shoutcast, which WFMU uses for some things anyway. But Last.fm appears to frown on this. How annoying.
