Ces Bottes Sont Faites Pour Marcher.

Just FYI.

My Heart’s Reflection

This one reads well and sounds even better. It is the ultimate expression of love in modern pop music:
“My Heart’s Reflection”
Got something to say, some dumb bit
Something that I usually leave unsaid
It doesn’t come so easily, I guess that’s no surprise
I wanna see my heart’s reflection in your eyes
Let’s lock the door, hide the key
I’ll [...]

Reality Cares Not For Legislative Language

From Public Citizen v. Young (831 F.2d 1108, ??):
By operation of the second law of thermodynamics, any substance, obviously including acrylonitrile, will migrate in minute amounts from a bottle into a beverage within the bottle.
…and into the world and universe as we [but apparently not Congress] conceive of them to be.

Some Songs Just Sound Better Played on a Cheap Boombox

Among them:

Lazy Line-Painter Jane by Belle & Sebastian
Benton Harbor Blues by the Fiery Furnaces (if played loud)
Most of that new-ish The Hold Steady album
Afro by JSBX

There are many more. This list will be updated.
Update: Almost anything with an electric guitar sounds better on a boombox, outside, when the weather is as it is today. Oh [...]

Do you own a pet?

(Today, this Blog answers a reader’s question. Have a question? Leave it in a comment or whisper it to yourself obsessively, over and over again, while using public transportation.)
Once I had a pond with enormous goldfish, bright, almost luminous, orange and left on their own for the past decade or more. But at age 5, [...]

Working on Leavin’ the Livin

“In heaven, everything is fine.”
The “Lady in the Radiator Song” makes an appearance on Mdoest Mouse’s 2000 EP Building Nothing Out of Something. Track 5, “Working on Leavin’ the Livin’” incorporates the lyrics of David Lynch’s semi-famous composition, building a bleak and ridiculously repetitious song that makes Lynch’s 15-minute adaptation–mostly radiator hiss and static–from [...]

The Times Gets Hip to the Negroni

The New York Times today stumbles upon my favorite drink with this recipe:
Negroni
MAKES 1 COCKTAIL
1 ounce gin
1 ounce Campari
1 ounce sweet vermouth.
Fair enough. Most recipes are a bit more complex and include some bitters or a splash of fresh orange juice.
The Times recommends Hendrick’s or Plymouth gin, and either is a fine choice. No. [...]

Two New Metaphors

Cleaning out the refrigerator as a sign of acceptance.
Filling the ice cube trays as a sign of hope.

Oh if I say goodbye then I am going to be the one to…

Today I made a decison. Maybe the decision was made for me and only today did I know it.
But it feels better to choose than to be pushed. But it still doesn’t feel so great.
But this too shall pass, someone said. Good advice, or is it? The question is one of agency.
Which [...]

Don’t Have to Be So Sad

You and me we’re at the goldfish pond,
and I, I was tagging along for the ride.
All the big mouthed fish really made us laugh,
and while I stood still I felt a chill.
I thought that maybe you did too.
I wanted to feel that way forever.
And that’s why
If you’re looking at me, I’ll try to be what [...]
