Apartment shopping today. I stopped by four places and could probably live in any of them:
- A fairly generic 1-br condo on R street, near Dupont East. The building is nice and seems quiet. Slow elevator. The apartment is neither big nor small. Small balcony. Kitchen is in great shape. Really the entire place is in great shape. Actually, maybe it was a bit small, on second thought. There was a study, though, off of the living room. $1700 / month.
- I stopped and looked at an apartment in the same building on the first floor. It was smaller, and the living room, which was partially below grade, seemed small and cage-like. The price was about the same as above.
- A great big place on Q Street. Before coming by, I walked around the neighborhood; P, Church, and Q Streets between 17th and 18th really are quite nice. The houses are in good shape, lots of trees, quiet and peaceful, etc. I think Church is probably my favorite. Anyway, this apartment was really big and a little bit run-down. Nothing too bad, though. It has a large kitchen, with gas range and room for a table, a large living room with super-high ceilings and a half-story loft (at the top of a rickety spiral staircase that if we move in I will never ascend, ever, and a big tub in the bathroom. It needs some work: painting, maybe some woodwork here and there, and floor repair in the kitchen, which I would imagine the owner would do. Regarding the loft: great place to put a TV set for Angharad?
- Two doors up from me on 21st, near R. This was a small place on the ground floor that has just been completely renovated. They did a great job: beautiful kitchen and appliances, great tile-work in the bedroom and bathroom, and a just-perfect dark hardwood floor. Drawbacks: it’s small and there’s probably not so much light as I or Angie would like. I do feel bad though about letting this one go, even though I’m pretty sure it’s the right thing to do.

You’re better off buying. You can get a decent home and be paying a mortgage for that kind of money!! Probably less, just depends what your requirements are.
Just a thought :)
Hopefully, you’ll find something that makes you happy!
