First, I noticed yesterday that a package of compact discs that I’d ordered from Amazon weeks ago reached Washington early in the morning.
I chose super-saver shipping, which means that Amazon sits on your order for a few weeks. Why? Product differentiation. If they shipped everything when it was ready, who would bother to pay for shipping?
Anyway, the box isn’t here, and the USPS, which hasn’t quite gotten this whole tracking/Interweb thing, only updates its tracking information daily.
I can’t remember what I ordered, specifically. Generally, it should be about a dozen classical CDs, several of which were recommended by Tyler Cowen on his weblog.
I spent some time last night looking around for new indie rock. It looks like Matador decimated its roster. K-Punk gave up on indie pop, more or less. I’ve got dollars that I want to spend on music but can’t find anything to buy. Just emo, and emo is whiny and boring.
What to do when your favorite genre kind of just gave up?!
Still, I shouldn’t complain. Indie pop reached its apex in 1994. Ten years or so is a more-than-generous decline.
And maybe I’ll be listening to more classical and opera for a while, which isn’t all bad.
So the box that did come in this morning wasn’t mine, not exactly. It was from Earthlink and had my Blackberry in it. The box should have gone to one of our tech people, but her name wasn’t on the box. I hadn’t been expecting the Blackberry to come for days or weeks or maybe a month, but now I’m disappointed that I can’t have it RIGHT NOW.
Still, my love affair with the 3G iPod hasn’t worn off yet, so that’s some solace. And I should be getting a new cellphone soon, maybe next month, as soon as I can dump T-Mobile, which seems to have awful service here in DC.
Needless (almost) to say, the “wow factor” of running Windows XP on my Powerbook (via Virtual PC) wore off real fast, like in the amount of time it takes to draw a new Explorer window in it (approx. 2 minutes). Because I only need to run IE, I have ordered Windows 95, which should do the trick (through v5.5, I think) and will be a lot zippier (it was almost useable on my 1st-gen G3 Powerbook).
My to-do list: find more music and more electronics to buy. Originally, the plan was to put off the latter and save up for new and appallingly-expensive speakers, but, at this point, why bother?

Check out Bishop Allen at http://www.bishopallen.com/ - Great people, great music … it restored my faith in indie rock. Ted Leo is pretty good too.
