Nice sound

My new NAD tuner has really nice sound. I’ve never heard radio sound so rich and clear.

Except, that is, around the middle of the dial, where the more-commercial stations compress everything and up the power so that it just sounds muddy, loud, and distorted. Really loud…to the point that there’s significant clipping (and there would be more but for that amplitudinal compression).

Of course, as the music on those stations isn’t to my taste anyway, it’s hardly worth complaining.

Even this Shostakovich piano concerto that’s on now sound detailed and very dynamic. Very impressive.

Still, let’s be honest: the real reason that I got this thing was to fully enjoy the smooth timber of NPR’s Robert Siegel.

And to experience C-Span Radio in glorious high fidelity!

Update: Bela Bartok! Amazing…
