Sen. Jon Kyl of AZ

“Justice delayed is justice denied.” Exactly. And the current filibusters are a historical anomoly. Democrats are obstructing nominees on every bench suffering a “judicial emergency.” “The Senate is falling down in its responsibility to fill these emergencies.” More than 4,100 cases in the 9th circuit are effected by this delay–there is a 36 month [...]

Schumer, Craig, Allen

He can’t get over the “168-4″ sign. Sure, it’s clever. But if 1 is wrong, than 4 are worse. If it’s a question of right and wrong, then 1 is too many.
Larry Craig has a good point on Fortas, as well: it wasn’t really a filibuster, as Fortas was shortly pulled. Keep in mind that [...]

Sen Reid

He brings up Abe Fortas, which is a good point. Not comperable (as there were serious ethical considerations dogging Fortas), but a good try anyway.
Now onto job loss. Apparently, Reid hasn’t been getting the monthly figures from the Depts. of Commerce and Labor.
“The poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer,” says Reid. [...]

Santorum & Allard & Allen

“Look at the precedent, my friends. No filibusters…because the Constitution says that it’s a majority vote.”
“We’re not trying to change the rules. We’re trying to bring back the rules.”
Santorum is physically bold and forceful.
Democrats are “twist[ing] the rules…to meet [their] partisan end.”
Great point (Allard): What would really erode the separation of powers? What [...]

Levin Gets It Wrong

It’s disengenuous to claim that the Republicans want to eliminate filibuster. The Frist-Miller proposal concerns just filibusters for appointments, and, even then, just for judicial appointments.
That said, at least he’s talking about the matter at hand, rather than the economy or welfare or unemployment or whatever.
Update: Dodd makes the same mistake.
Also, Dodd [...]

Boring Posts

I’m up watching the marathon filibuster. The chambers were mobbed, and so I have retreated to my office for the night.
Like clockwork: every thirty minutes the democrats call for a legislative session on a bill to extend welfare benefits, in light of the economy. But given the past two weeks of great economic news, it [...]

No, not dead

Just busier than usual.
And reading the “Complete Fictions” of Jorge Luis Borges, which beats the pants off blogging any day.
And getting ready to spend Wednesday night in the Senate gallery.
And doing some other stuff, too.
