Thanks to Matt Haughey and Jerry Kindall, I’ve got a “now playing” category set up. Basically, every time I listen to a track in iTunes, the script pings this site with an update. When I get around to it, I’ll add the most recent 10 or so to the sidebar of my blog.
I think it would be neat if we could get a lot of Dartmouth students, alumni, etc., to start doing something like this collaboratively. It only takes about 5 minutes to setup, and there’s a Windows Media Player version of the client script as well. Also, I’ve made a few improvements to the iTunes script to make it more reliable.
If anyone else is interested in adding this to their weblog, let me know, and I’ll set it up as a group weblog for the whole site (something like “http://dartblogs.com/playing/”), easily filterable by username (maybe something like “http://dartblogs.com/playing/username/”). To contribute, all you really need is a computer, a net connection, and iTunes or WMP.
Pretty cool, I think.

Very cool.
Except I rarely use my laptop to listen to tunes… Slows down other operations at the same time, non?
On my Mac, iTunes takes up between 5-7% of the processor when it’s playing. Barely noticeable, in other words.
Plus the Powerbook speakers really sound great, even if they aren’t loud enough to use for ambient, away-from-computer listening.
